A Virtual History Tour of Marple and District

The Society of Marple Artists hold an exhibition of their members paintings every year in April. It is hugely popular with the local community and receives large numbers of visitors, many who vote for their favourite paintings. This album was begun after the 2011 exhibition and hopefully will continue to grow with images from the SMA's exhibitions for many years to come.

This year's Marple Carnival was the first under the guidance of new chairman John Wright and a team of new and old guard volunteers, and didn't they do well! The theme of UP, UP AND AWAY! gave plenty of scope for the parade and put on a colourful show despite the mixed weather. Saturday 25 June 2011 was National Civic Day and to celebrate this and Marple Civic Society's own 50th Anniversary the society organised a special task day with many local groups taking part in their own tasks and then joining them for a picnic in Marple Memorial Park in the afternoon. Local MP Andrew Stunell presented certificates to participating groups.

Marple's Second Festival Fortnight from 17 September to 1 October 2011 kicked off with the Food and Drink Day on Market Street Precinct and continued with a huge variety of events, activities and competitions. This album captures the best moments from the Festival taken by local photographers.

Saturday 10 March 2012 was the official opening of the restored Wellington Wheel Pit at Mellor Mill near Roman Lakes. The wheel pit, restored by the Mellor Archaeological Trust, was opened by Mark Sissons, Chair of the Association for Industrial Archaeology.

Marple turned out to celebrate Marple Carnival's 50th Anniversary despite the weather. In this Diamond Jubilee and Olympics year the theme was fittingly Great Britain and there was plenty of red, white and blue on display and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
